Another Hero Falls

8 – 15 Lamashan 4712

Using his in-depth knowledge of Thassilonian history, the elf wizard Gedryr deduced that the riddle involved Sorshen, Runelord of Lust, the Lady, and Karzoug, Runelord of Greed, who appeared to be making an offering, the Lie.

WhenKellfrid embraced the two statues, a golden mist formed in the empty alcove, and steeling themselves for whatever lies ahead, our heroes walked into the mist. They then found themselves in another chamber, higher in the Lady’s Light. A seven walled, heptagonal chamber, its stone polished to a reflective sheen. Red metal doors sat in the walls, two five foot wide mosaics of a coiled serpent were set slightly offset from the rooms’ center in the floor.

As the group was getting their bearing, bursting forth through one of the red doors came a woman warrior, clad is gleaming platemail, brandishing a sword and steel shield with the Rune of Lust emblazoned upon it.

“Who are you, fools??” she shouted, “Sorshen’s latest pawns? Her newest play things? Come to finally kill me after she tired of controlling my mind?!? At least she doesn’t force my warriors to shed my blood. Come, fools, let me welcome you to this cursed place with all you deserve! If I fall, tell your bitch mistress, Sorshen, that Oriana, Commander of the Gray Maidens, Defender of the True Queen of Korvosa, died well, and with my sword in my hand!!!!!”

Kellfrid Yngvildrsdottir, ready for a challenge at any time, stepped forward, and announced, “I am Kellfrid Yngvildsdottir!!!” But, before things escalated, Searos Woodsoul stepped forward in FODM, and began to smooth Oriana’s feathers.

It seems Oriana has been made a prisoner since she refused to kill the half-orc witch, Maroux, and during that time, she’s begun to question this “Sorshen.”

With Searos and the group filling in some blanks for the Gray Maiden, she suddenly saw clearly that she’s been duped, and hungers for revenge.

Formulating a plan, and utilizing the resources at the group’s disposal to combat this false Sorshen, Ashamintallu’s, greatest strength, mind control and compulsion. Also, they agreed to let Searos take the lead, and call out “Sorshen” for what she truly is, the demon-spawn, Ashamintallu.

Ready, the group then followed Oriana’s instructions on how to activate the next teleportation device, then, when a shimmering curtain of golden magic appeared, they entered. Ready for combat.

Arriving at their destination, the private boudoir for Ashamintallu. who seemed less than surprised to see the motley crew appear in her presence, the group prepared for action.

“Sorshen” spoke honeyed words, “Ah…Oriana, my love, this is an unexpected treat. And you’ve brought me new supplicants? Welcome, you’ve arrived just in time; my latest plaything seems to have lost her allure when she lost her life.” She motions to a dead woman hanging from the ceiling.

“Perhaps one of you could pleasure me a bit longer? Which of you think you could pleasure Sorshen, Runelord of Lust? You, perhaps, half breed. You look as though you could satisfy. The dwarf and that…is that man or a woman? Either way, both are so foul, they disturb me. And you, elf, you can watch. You look like you like to observe or play the submissive.”

“Anyway, Oriana…since you returned, is this an indication that you’ve had a change of heart from our last conversation? Are you ready to bring me that filthy witch’s head? Please go now, and take those two hairy beasts with you. And you two…come closer, and undress…”

Itching for a fight, our heroes and their new ally held fast, while Searos confronted the demon using her true name. Ashamintallu attempted to laugh off this confrontation, but her mind began to rebel. As Searos and his comrades continued the verbal confrontation, Ashamintallu’s mind finally broke and, shrieking with the horror of realization, she reverted to her true, alu-demon form.

And, it was on.

Flying high above, Ashamintallu began to cast Charm and Confusion spells on the group, hoping to dominate them, taking them out of the fight. But, our heroes prepared properly and were able to repel these attacks.

Well, most of our heroes.

Gedryr, the elf wizard, succumbed to a Confusion spell as was left a babbling, self-mutilating, comrade harming shell of the wizard he is.

Spells and arrows flew as Ashamintallu maintained her aerial superiority over the group. Fireballs from the demon tore into the group, while Gurion and Oriana’s arrows landed true, with Kellfrid positioning herself for Icicle strikes when the demon flew past.

The fight was a brutal slog of attrition, with the demon seizing the advantage when her Phantasmal Killer spell felled Kellfrid.

With their fighter dead, the group, except for Gedryr, who was busy being a cutter, rallied to each other, the specter of their death close at hand. But, soon, Ashaminatllu ran out of spells, and thinking she had softened up the group enough, landed to cut a path through them with her magical guisarme.

A few strokes from this guisarme seemed to spell doom for our heroes, but Searos kept them alive channeling Erastil’s healing power when death seemed imminent. Haughty and full of villainous confidence, Ashamintallu began to move blindly, thinking of the kill, and not her surroundings.

It was then that her luck wore off.

Striding in to unleash death, Ashamintallu placed herself between the Gray Maiden, Oriana, and the dwarf ranger, Gurion, whose brutal Stealth Attack caught the demon unaware and now, trapped between Sea, Gurion’s hammer, and Oriana’s magical longsword, Ashamintallu was soon laid low.

With Ashamintallu dead, and the wizard finally regaining his mind, the group hurried to Kellfrid. Trying to heal the Ulfen Shield Maiden proved fruitless, and again, the second time in two days, our heroes mourned a fallen comrade.

But, there was no time to grieve, as the search for the Shard must continue. Finding a teleportation device to Ashamintallu’s treasure room, the group found what they’ve searched for, a triangular shard of red metal: the Shard of Lust.

Claiming their prize, and cleaning out the rest of the treasure, the group then set to work attending to their fallen dead. Rhondal, a lover of the sexual pleasures, they placed in Sorshen’s bed, is a position violating the corpse of Ashamintallu.

The three remaining Heroes smiled at the memory of their comrade, and thought Rhondal would want to be laid to rest this way.

And then the Shield Maiden was placed in a boat with her arms and armor, which was set adrift then fired. A proper funeral for an Ulfen warrior.

Sorrow washed over Gurion as he watched his longtime friend’s body consumed by the flames; the dreams of the adventures they planned to share, now gone, drifting away like the smoke from the fire.

After resting for the night, the group, with Oriana, left the Lady’s Light.

Passing through the boggard village, the chieftain, Daghop, is thrilled to see his “mighty warriors” return, although not thrilled to see a Gray Maiden. Wishing the group well, but not offering them an opportunity to stay, the group left the boggards behind.

Trudging again through the swamp, the air cooler than their previous trek, the group decided to touch base with the troglodytes to confirm their trade agreement with them. As they approached, Gedryr and Searos heard a bombastic, familiar voice. It belonged to Jasper Kandamerus who, confusing the directions, began to walk to the Cape when he was supposed to meet the group.

Oh, Jasper.

At any rate, he learned from Maroux the witch that the group had passed through already, following, he found the troglodytes adrift, in need of leadership and guidance. The kind of leadership and guidance Groteus and his herald could provide.

The troglodytes, revived under Jasper’s guidance, are excited work with “man-folk” to gather herbs and excited for what tomorrow will bring for their clan. Well, as excited for tomorrow as worshippers of Groteus, who believe the end of the world is at hand, can be.

But, alas, all’s well that ends well.

Spending the night with the troglodytes (outside, in their tent), the group pushed on early the next morning, the sound of Jasper’s preaching echoing from the caves, they headed to Maroux’s. Finding Maroux in need of Kelpie’s Hair, Gurion and Oriana, headed to the shipwreck to gather more while Searos and Gedryr rubbed Maroux’s trick hip.

Another night was spent with Maroux who told the group who to get back to Magnimar if they didn’t want to wait two weeks for the boat.

They didn’t.

So off they went, passing four grueling days in the swamp. On the fifth, they saw the Yondabakari River and the road to Magnimar.

Heroes Move On
A Hero Falls

30 Rova – 8 Lamashan 4712

So our heroes moved on to search this level of the Lady’s Light, discovering amazing Thassilonian relics and facing a fiendish creature who toyed with the groups’ mind, but fell to their blades and magic.

When the group was confident that they had searched all there was to search, they descended down the stairwell. When they reached the landing they found a lurid sculpture of Sorshen, legs spread and inviting. A sign in gold above the statue read: “If you wish to enter my domain, sweet slave, prostrate thyself and demonstrate proper devotion. So Searos did, performing cunnilingus on the statue, properly, and found himself transported to another level.

His comrades followed his lead, went down on the statue, and were all transported deeper into the Lady’s Light.

On they moved, spending days fighting lacedons, a crazed cave giant who thought she was Sorshen, giant undead bats, and a sea hag who made her lair in the depths of the Lady’s Light. When our heroes defeated this vile hag, they discovered a tortured prisoner, a Gray Maiden warrior who fell out of favor with Sorshen, the Runelord of Lust, and was betrayed by her comrades.

This Gray Maiden, Helenda Mertien, was glad to out of the clutches of the sea hag, who she called, “Daefu,” and was able to provide aid and some insight to our heroes. Beyond allying herself with the group to face her treacherous former comrades, Helenda mentioned that she had been visited by Sorshen, herself, but during her torture, she noted that Sorshed seemed to rebel and argue against herself, and at one time the arguing was so intense, that Helenda swore Sorshen became some kind of winged demon, but she also thought her tortured mind might have been playing games with her.

So, armed with this knowledge, and an ally, the group powered through the Gray Maiden barracks. After clearing out the Gray Maidens, and thanking Helenda, who took gold, armor and weapons and left, our heroes cleaned out what was left of the level. During which, they found an ancient perfume room, and a long hidden and forgotten temple to the demon Nocticula.

Fighting off Shadow Hounds guardian, our heroes recovered treasure and a holy symbol from this temple, items that might impress the Magnimarian artist, Ayavah, who had contracted the group to retrieve demon relics from the Lady’s Light.

Moving on, the group found a teleportation device that led them to another chamber on this level, however, this trip was not without issue. As Kellfrid arrived first and found herself outnumbered by a group of lustspawn, whose millennia of celibacy drove them to overpower the barbarian and begin to violently rape her.

But, her party arrived soon enough and rescued their comrade from this predicament and lay low the foul creatures.

And on they pressed, facing and defeating a powerful lustspawn sorceress and another band of Gray Maidens. Uncovering more lost Thassilonian wonders, in a room covered in blood, they encountered a family of vampire mists and when they were defeated, made an amazing discovery: a mural depicting Sorshen’s plan to survive the apocalypse that destroyed Thassilon.

As the group studied this, three babau demons emerged to defend the mural. The battle was brutal and did not leave our heroes unscathed. At the end, Rhondal Belliveau, Varisian rogue, was left dead.

Gathering his body, and putting it in their Bag of Holding for burial later, the survivors ascended a stairway they discovered 200 feet into the Lady’s Light, and found a large room eight alcoves. Seven of the alcoves housed a statue of one of the Runelords, while the eight was empty. Flowery Thassilonian script was on the floor, but due to its intricate writing, proper translation was difficult.

Gedryr translated the passage to read: “She who desires to ascend the Lady’s Light must first deign to embrace the Lady and the Lie.”

Meanwhile, Searos translated the passage as: “She who desires to ascend the Lady’s Light must first deign the embrace those with whom the Lady Lies.”

Our heroes mourned their loss and pondered their choices.

29 – 30 Rova 4712

With the gate finally unlocked, but unopened, Searos Woodsoul, cleric of Erastil, surveyed the scene and called for his badly bloodied comrades to withdraw and regroup. As they withdrew back to the beach, they could hear the taunting call of their bone-white foe call out, “Oh, such a shame, seems like my fun is done for the day…” and then they heard the cruel click of the portcullis’s lock snapping back in place.

Back on the beach, our heroes took stock of the situation and took time to heal. Determined to find a way through the barricade, the group made a plan, hefted their weapons, readied their spells and headed back to the portcullis.

When they returned, even their foe showed sympathy for them, shouting out, “For pity’s sake…leave while you can…I shall not let you pass…”

But, still our heroes advanced.

Hiding behind the magic of the elven wizard, Gedryr Telhenar, the Varisian rogue, Rhondal Belliveau, made his way to the gate and set to work on the lock. Behind him, his comrades came to support him.

After his abject failure earlier in the day, Rhondal appeared a new man, focused and highly skilled, the rogue made quick work of the lock, not only opening it, but springing the door open. With this, his comrades who had been taking a beating at the hands of their foe, charged through the now open doorway and, now five on one, made quick work of their rapier wielding, magic casting enemy.

Searching the room and their foe, who Searos recognized to be a dhampir, the living offspring of a vampire and mortal woman, the group gathered what they could and, still wounded and low on healing, returned to the beach. But, not before Rhondal used his skill to relock the portcullis in a manner that it could not be opened with the switch or easily from the other side of the group and set up some devious traps along the way.

The party then rested and awoke refreshed, ready to continue their exploration.

Heading back through the portcullis room, our heroes continued through the next doorway revealing a hallway, curving to the south, lined with a single row of pillars, each carved in the likeness of Sorshen, the Runelord of Lust. Wary of the columns from their encounter with the caryatid columns at the Lady’s Light entrance, the group took no chances and were not surprised when the Sorshen’s heads disconnected from the pillars and moved to attack.

While these marble sentinels were stout foes, our heroes managed to dispatch them with little difficulty. Receiving healing, collecting arrows, the group moved on, and following a long hallway heading west, found another locked door.

Again, Rhondal took control of the situation and quickly picked the lock and carefully opened the door. But, as soon as the door opened, a voice from the room was heard, “Excellent. New playthings…” and a wave of Crushing Despair washed over the group.

Peering into the room, the group found a darkly handsome male humanoid with batlike wings and curving horns flying into a defensive position, ready to take on intruders.

However, the incubus’s magic filled most of the group with a sense of hopelessness, effecting their ability to fight. Arrows flew and spells were cast, but nothing seemed to phase this creature from the Abyss who charmed Rhondal and Kellfrid Yngvildrsdottir, shield maiden from the frozen north.

After carving his way through those foes he did not bother charming, the incubus returned to the center of his room and ordered Rhondal to defend him and Kellfrid to get on her knees and, after undoing his britches, please him. Rhondal took up a position to defend the incubus while Kellfrid began to fellate the demon.

With a reprieve for being attacked the remaining members of the group healed and came up with a plan to strike. Gedryr led the way, unleashing a magical assault on the demon along with the arrow attacks of Gurion RedEmber, Deep Walker of Janderhoff, and Searos.

Annoyed by this interruption, and overconfident, the incubus ordered his “guard” Rhodal to “kill that elf…” At this command, the Varisian was able to break the control of the spell and he turned and ruthlessly attacked his foe.

Kellfrid, balls deep, was still working feverishly at fellating the incubus until he kicked her off and moved to defend himself.

But, it was too late.

Our heroes slowly gained the momentum and, not without injury, they managed to lay low this beast from the Abyss.

Kellfrid soon returned to her own senses, and the group took stock of their situations and decided to move deeper into the Lady’s Light.

Finding a door this room they agreed to open it standing ready, and upon opening it, discovered a dreadfully hot, large, octagonal chamber. The very air shimmered with head nearly dripped with humidity that left every surface of the polished white, marbled room shiny with condensation. The ceiling rose to a dome thirty feet high and ahead, at ten feet, the floor rose up in a three foot step, then again at twenty feet. In the center of the room a strange gray flame danced in a central firepit. Two smaller chambers led to the south and west, while to the east, a ten-foot-square section of wall was dull gray, contrasting with the white of the marble surrounding it. A single torch in a sconce stood, unlit, in the middle of the gray section of wall.

Searching the room, the magic users discovered that the torch radiates faint transmutation magic and that it had been lit at some point in the past. Deciding to light it with the strange gray flame in the center of the room, Rhondal took the torch and, when he began to climb the three-foot step, was attacked by four creatures that sprung forth from the flame.

To a less experienced band, these creatures, identified as cacodaemons, may have proved difficult, if not fatal. But, to our band of heroes, steeled through weeks of combat, these creatures fell quickly.

Then, when peace returned to the room, Rhondal lit the torch and returned it to its sconce. When he did, the gray section of wall pivoted outward like a huge gray door, revealing a well-lit stairwell descending downwards. Faced with a choice to head downward or continue to search this level, the group decided to continue on searching this level and began to search the room.

28 – 29 Rova 4712

Waking refreshed in the boggard’s temple, our merry band gathered two vials of the “magic juice” brewed by the boggards to make the “giant snapping grabber bugs” docile and headed off into the caverns.

After waking and healing and doing their morning routine, our heroes linked up with their troglodyte guide, Arzevev, who was clad in his late cleric’s leather armor. Deciding that they would investigate this beast called, Gegganalleg, or “Many Mouths” in the common tongue, Arzevev led them to the creature’s lair.

Waking refreshed, our heroes prayed, studied, ate and decided to try round two of negotiating with the demon worshipping troglodyte tribe in hopes that they could use their underground passages to the Lady’s Light and cement a trade agreement for Sabriyya Kalmeralm.

So, off they went.

Witches, Frogs and Trogs

24 – 25 Rova 4712

After prayers and studying, our heroes began their long, wet march through marshland of the Mushfens. After several arduous hours, following the map Jasper provided, they were able to find the path that led to the bridge connecting the path with the witch Maroux’s island. Nearing the island Rhondal and Gurion spied a raven circling overhead, then land on a post of the bridge. Simultaneously, from the island, they saw Maroux who shouted, “Who you fools be visiting my island? Ain’t nobody got time for that!!! Unless you want to join the turnips in my soup, get off my island!!!”

With the street and marketplace buzzing over the violence witnessed, and cries for the city watch ringing out, Searors Woodsoul, cleric of Erastil, took his comrade, the Varisian rogue,Rhondal Belliveau, aside and whispered, “Be gone before the watch arrives; we’ll handle this here. Take the alleys and we’ll meet you back at Ayra’s.”

17 – 18 Rova 4712

With the half-elf Cleric of Erastil, Searos Woodsoul, feeling the pull of the next fragment of the Shattered Star, our heroes searched the derros’ main room with meticulousness. Soon, Rhondal Belleveau, the Varisian rogue, found the almost imperceptible outline of a secret door, hidden for millennia.

After dispatching the derro and her human companion, Fenster the Blight, Searos began to wonder about Fenster’s odd behavior. That, coupled with Rhondal’s disinterested attitude toward the combat, made the half-elf investigate the wand Atlatia wielded. His suspicions were confirmed when he and Gedryr discerned that the wand cast Charm Person.

Realizing they murdered a citizen of Magnimar, Searos quickly said, “Umm…best not tell people about all this…”
